The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 places a ‘duty of care' on employers and landlords to maintain electrical systems to prevent any danger The most efficient and comprehensive way of ensuring these duties are performed, and adequate records are kept, is by performing Periodic Electrical Test and Inspection in accordance with BS7671:2018 (The IEE Wiring Regulations) and Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) in accordance with the IEE Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.
By following the guidelines within this legislation will ensure that the client can prove their obligations have been met under the Health and Safety at Work Act so far as electrical safety is concerned, and more importantly that anyone coming in contact with those assets remains safe.
FET (Fixed Electrical Testing) & PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) requires a series of visual inspections and electronic tests to be performed, in order to establish the safety and suitability of the electrical system or portable equipment. This type of work does require the main supply to be isolated or the portable item to be removed from service therefore, with careful planning this work can be done at a more convenient time such as overnight or weekends.
JRP operates an autonomous electrical compliance department to provide clients with a comprehensive service ensuring all their electrical assets remain fit for purpose and are safe for use. This includes works within Hazardous Area environments.
We can provide the total service including maintaining a comprehensive asset register and compliance database to ensure all records are available, up to date and the electrical safety for all assets can be assured.
Our services also include no obligation quotations to repair deviations from BS7671 and provide the required re-certification.
Due to our expertise within Industrial market sectors serviced over many years, we have developed specialist skills and experience in EICA projects within a variety of hazardous areas.
Our specialist knowledge combined with stringent and robust Health, Safety & Environmental procedures ensure that all hazardous area works are completed with the paramount safety of all involved.
Explosive Areas
All Organisations must classify areas where hazardous explosive atmospheres may occur into distinct zones. The classification given to a particular zone, and its size and location, depends on the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere occurring and its persistence if it does. Areas classified into zones (0, 1, 2 for gas-vapor-mist and 20, 21, 22 for dust) must be protected from effective sources of ignition.
The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) provide a mandatory requirement to prove the competency of personnel undertaking work within potentially hazardous environments. These legal requirements brought about a competency scheme (CompEx) that assesses both the theoretical knowledge and practical competency of individuals working in these environments. JRP can supply CompEx trained labour resources (Ex 01, 02, 03, 04, 09, 10) for the preparation & installation, maintenance and inspection of apparatus within potentially explosive environments.
Whether undertaking specialist installation, refurbishment or maintenance works within explosive areas, JRP can provide a trained and skilled labour force to effectively and safely plan, design, manage and complete the works, ensuring all appropriate equipment is installed meeting the requirements of current legislation whilst ensuring the greatest care and attention is observed at all times.
Confined Spaces
Dangers can arise in confined spaces due to a lack of oxygen. Some hazardous conditions may already be present in the confined space, however, some may arise through the work being carried out, or because of leakage / seepage from connected sources.
Before any work can be carried out, suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks are required under The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. For work in confined spaces this means identifying the hazards present, assessing the risks and determining what precautions to take. In most cases the assessment includes:
- The task
- The working environment
- Working materials and tools
- The suitability of those carrying out the task
- Arrangements for emergency rescue
Should an assessment identify risks of serious injury from work in confined spaces, the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 apply and a safe system of work must be in place with adequate emergency arrangements defined before any work starts.
JRP are skilled at assessing, planning, managing and undertaking specialist work within confined spaces and can prove competency and training (including escape and full breathing apparatus) to appropriate standards.
We are proud to have been involved in some prestigious contracts to include works within the Thames Water London Ring Main and on many other subterranean shafts & tunnel networks.
JRP can undertake complete project management, site surveys, design, estimation, installation, maintenance & fabrication for mechanical works. JRP has many years of experience in the provision of the following: -
- Fabrication and installation of mechanical fabrications (and any associated design) including supply of all necessary materials e.g. pipe, flanges, plate, bolts and valves, etc.
- Minor mechanical repairs/modifications
- Pipe work installation / modifications
- Instrumentation installation / spool pieces
- Sampling / pre-sampling pump chambers and installations
- Flow metering
- General mechanical installation steel fabrications, lifting equipment, pipework, rotating machinery e.g. pumps, blowers, compressors, etc
- JRP conducts project-related and responsive mechanical repairs/maintenance / installations with our team of mechanical fitters and fabricators providing support works throughout the UK.
We have a proven track record of delivering high-quality MEICA related plant installation services across industrial markets throughout the UK.
We can provide design, manufacture, and installation of stainless steel, ductile iron, carbon steel and upvc pipework along with the pipe supports, stands, etc.
JRP supplies all manner of standard and bespoke mild and stainless steel fabricated process pipework systems and specialist designs mainly for use in water and wastewater applications.
We can provide individual pipe spool piece designs for instrumentation and process applications as well as bespoke designs for individual applications.
Fabrication Control Measures
The control of materials including consumables (grinding wheels, brushes, etc), pipe tube, box section, plate, flanges, and the documentation for the separate types of materials is performed by using clearly designated and separated areas for storage of raw materials and completed goods as well as fabrication.
JRP operates a Quarantined Controlled Zoning procedure for both carbon steel and stainless steel materials. This includes all materials, tools, PPE, and documentation appertaining to the different types of metal.
On delivery of the raw material, the test certificate will be verified against the delivery statement and the etched identification on the materials to ensure the correct grade/material has been delivered. Welding Benches are of the same material as the metal being fabricated.
In supporting other works conducted by JRP, we can provide minor civils works to accommodate the complete project need including areas such as: -
- Cable Ducting
- Cable Trenching
- Plinths & Bases
- Minor repairs/modifications
- All works are undertaken by specialist personnel with appropriate plant, PPE, and procedures in place to safely conduct all works.
Larger civil works applications would be conducted by specialist approved sub-contractors.
